Storage for market traders, events and seasonal stock

Updated October 2026 ยท 3 min read

Market traders, event companies and businesses with seasonal stock need storage they can get in and out of quickly, often early in the morning and several times a week. The right choice is usually a drive-up container or a ground-floor indoor unit near a loading bay, with access hours that match your trading days. Here is what to look for.

Who this suits

  • Market traders who need to store a gazebo, tables, display stands and stock between market days.
  • Event and exhibition businesses with stands, banners, staging, furniture, lighting and AV kit.
  • Caterers and pop-up sellers storing non-perishable equipment, such as tables, canopies and serving kit.
  • Seasonal businesses holding Christmas stock, garden products, or kit that is only used part of the year.

Van access is everything

If you load a van several times a week, every extra minute adds up. When comparing stores, ask:

  1. Can you park right outside your unit, or how far is it to the nearest loading bay?
  2. Is there room for a large van, a Luton or a van with a trailer to turn and park?
  3. Are there trolleys, flatbeds or pallet trucks, and is there a lift if the unit is upstairs?
  4. Are the doors and corridors wide enough for long items like stand panels, trestle tables and banner poles?

A ground-floor unit near the entrance or a drive-up container usually makes life much easier than a cheaper unit on an upper floor.

Frequent visits and early starts

Markets and events often mean leaving before dawn and coming back late. Check access hours carefully:

  • What time the gates open on the days you trade, including weekends and bank holidays.
  • Whether 24-hour or extended access is available and how much it costs.
  • How you get in, for example keypad, fob or app, so you are not waiting for reception to open.

Location matters too. A unit on the route between home and your main markets or venues cuts travel time on every trip.

Containers vs indoor units

Both can work well. The right one depends on what you store and how often you visit.

Best forBulky, robust kit: gazebos, staging, tables, barriersStock and items that need to stay dry and clean: printed banners, textiles, AV, paper goods

Access hoursOften longer, but varies by yardVaries, some sites offer extended access

Some businesses use both: a container for heavy, weatherproof kit and a small indoor unit for stock and delicate items. Our full guide to container vs indoor storage goes into more detail.

Organising for quick turnarounds

When you are packing for a market at 5am, you need to grab the right things fast.

  • Load in reverse. Keep what goes in the van first (usually the heaviest kit) nearest the door.
  • Kit lists by event type. Keep a checklist on the inside of the door for each type of market or show.
  • Group by job. Keep each stand or event set together in labelled crates.
  • Use freestanding shelving for stock, so boxes do not end up in one big pile.
  • Protect fabrics and printed items in sealed crates, especially in a container.

Seasonal stock and flexible sizes

If your stock goes up and down through the year, ask whether the store lets you move to a bigger or smaller unit at short notice. Rolling monthly terms make it easier to take extra space before a busy season and drop back afterwards. Check the store's rules on what you can store too, as perishable food, gas bottles and fuel are usually not allowed. See what you can't put in storage.
